When will the changes in housing benefit affect me?

A number of changes are being introduced to the way housing benefit works. These changes will be introduced in a phased approach over a period of time, this means that all the housing benefit changes will not happen all at once. The first changes will happen from 1st April 2011.

When will the changes in housing benefit affect me?

  • When you make a new claim. If you make a new claim for local housing allowance from 1st April 2011, the changes will affect you from the date you sumitted your newest housing benefit claim.
  • When there is a change in your circumstances. If there is a change in any of your circumstances then your housing benefit will be re-calculated considering the new housing benefit rules.
  • On the anniversary of your claim. Many of the changes to housing benefit will happen on the anniversary of your claim, this is when your entitlement will be reassessed. The anniversary of your housing benefit claim is 1 year after your claim was made. For example, if you claim was made on 30th April 2011, the anniversary will be on 30th April 2012.
